Research for Question 1 of CCR:

Hi Cambridge! For today's post, I'm researching the question "How does your product use or challenge conventions and how does it represent social groups or issues?"

This question is very broad and covers a lot, so my teacher broke down the question and gave us a few bullets on what we should answer/address in our CCR. This way I can answer the question to the fullest. Here's a little summarized version of what I need to discuss:

- Discuss genre conventions
- Discuss which conventions you chose to challenge or not to
- Discuss representation

Since throughout this process, all of the blog posts I've made already have some of my research, my work is almost complete. But just to double check, I used the website Studio Binder.

Coming-of-Age Genre Conventions:

- New experiences/first time for something/rite of passage
- Identity Crisis/self-discovery
- Conflict with authority
- Exclusion/conformity
- Turning point decision
- A bittersweet ending
- Teen protagonist
- Mentor
- Friend group
- Love interest
- Rebellion
- Naturalistic lighting
- Handheld filming
- Montages
- Diegetic music
- Reflective voiceover

Didn't challenge/Coming-of-Age Genre Conventions I utilized: (Explanation of how I used it)

- New experiences/first time for something/rite of passage (She found out she's pregnant)
- Identity Crisis/self-discovery
- Exclusion/conformity
- Teen protagonist (Jess)
- Love interest (Her boyfriend)
- Rebellion (Running away from home and not telling anyone)
- Naturalistic lighting
- Handheld filming
- Montages
- Reflective voiceover (Using 1st person, intimate tone because she's talking about her personal thoughts)
- Realistic (the setting of her house, clothing choices, and soft lighting)
- Symbolism (her posters and trinkets showcasing her interests and the choice of music)

Challenged/Coming-of-Age Genre Conventions I did not utilize: (Explanation of why not)

- Utilizing drugs and alcohol (This shifts the tone of what I wanted for the film opening and makes it a lot more trouble. Also, I feel like this plot is often overused).

- Conflict with authority/Exclusion/conformity/Mentor (This will be shown later on in the film if I were making a whole movie. I would have a school scene depicting how she's treated by her friends, classmates, and teachers).

-Turning point decision/A bittersweet ending (the big decision I would want to show is whether she has the baby or not, but I didn't use it since it's only the opening).

Representation:

This year, we learned about representation to prepare for the Media Context and Media Texts essay. Here is a picture of my notes from class.

Coming-of-Age has two categories, a feel-good/funny and a realistic route. I chose for my film to be realistic and make it how growing up actually is for some people.

My film opening tells the story of a troubled teenage girl who goes through a teen pregnancy. This is not one of your typical stories as there are only 109 films that depict teen pregnancy according to Wikipedia. In real life, almost 21 million teenage girls become pregnant each year. Of that 21 million, an innumerable number of girls get an abortion. This is experience that can alter someone's entire life. So, I wanted to show it from a teenage girl's perspective so people can see how it really is in their shoes. In the political and news world, this is a very hot topic, and discussion is often not encouraged. But I think it's important to be educated on topics like this.

This is the overall gist of what I'm trying to say for question 1 of my CCR as I still need to decide which media products I'm making. Once I decide on my idea, I will make sure to update you on my script!
